Description

The monument consists of a promontory fort of the Iron Age, about 2000 years old. An irregular promontory is defended by three ramparts and ditches through which an entrance causeway approaches from the NW. Excavations between 1962 and 1971 produced artefacts consistent with occupation during the Roman period, probabaly in the 2nd century AD.

A considerable portion of the interior and the defences was not excavated.

The area to be scheduled is irregular in shape, measuring 70m NW-SE by 70m transversely, and is bounded on the NW by a field dyke (which is excluded from scheduling) and elsewhere by the top of the coastal cliffs, as marked in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance as a promontory fort of the Iron Age which, taken together with other such forts along the Angus coast, has the potential to considerably enhance our understanding of Iron Age settlement in the area.
